Ubuntu CT FC continued with their run of upset results when they outplayed, then hung on for victory to become the only NFD side to advance to the quarterfinal draw of the Nedbank Cup. Clint Fredericks scored his second of the season just seven minutes in to rock Amazulu and set the tone for the first half. 20 minutes later and the Cape side snatched a second with Duncan Adonis finding the net. Ubuntu led 2 – 0 at halftime but extended their lead when Man of the Match Mahlatsi nabbed his first for the Cape side. From then on it was all Amazulu and although it took Khanyeza 76 minutes to open the home sides’ account, their pressure was relentless. Ovidy Karuru brought Usuthu to within 1 with a 90th minute strike, but Ubuntu were able to hang on for a famous victory.
KAIZER CHIEFS 2 STELLENBOSCH FC 1
For the second year in a row, Stellenbosch FC lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup. The two sides met in Round 1 last year with Chiefs wining 3 – 0. Amakhosi opened their account just before the half hour mark when Mathoho headed home. With Chiefs leading 1 – 0 at halftime, the visitors were still in the match. That changed though twenty minutes into the second half when Castro doubled the Chiefs lead. Stellenbosch FC hung in a caused the home side cause for concern when Robertson netted his first goal of the season with 13 minutes to play. It was not to be however for the Cape side as Chiefs moved on to the quarterfinals..
ROYAL EAGLES 1 MARITZBURG UNITED 2
A KZN derby that was hit by bad weather, and produced a result for the PSL team. Maritzburg United snatched the lead in 1st half stoppage time when Mekoa found the net. Eagles were back in it when Niang scored the equaliser from the penalty spot after foul play by the visitors. But it was not to be for Eagles as Xulu’s glancing header found the back of the net with extra time looming, leaving Eagles to contemplate on surviving the NFD season.
BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC 3 RICHARDS BAY FC 1
Bloemfontein Celtic made it 3 – 1 on the scoreboard in Mangaung and 3 – 1 to PSL sides over their NFD opponents in Round 2 of the Nedbank Cup. The home side took the lead with 4 minutes to play in the 1st half when Maruping found the net. The visitors were more competitive in the second half, but it was Celtic who scored a second goal with just 4 minutes remaining through Maema, and Pfumbizai confirmed the win 4 minutes later with a third goal for the home side. Richards Bay never gave up with Nkoana scoring a consolation goal in second half stoppage time.
